How can we explain those informal phrases we use every day as Spanish speakers?

A brazo partido

To fight or work tooth and nail.

A buen entendedor, pocas palabras

A word to the wise is enough.

A buen puerto vas por leña

To look for something you need in a place where you will probably not find it.

A caballo regalado no se le miran los dientes

Don´t look a gift horse in the mouth.

A cada cerdo le llega su sanmartín

Sooner or later, everybody feels pain or distress.

A Dios rogando y con el mazo dando

God helps those who help themselves.

A la primera de cambio

At the first opportunity.

A la vejez, viruela

Things happen untimely.

A lo hecho, pecho

What´s done it´s done.

A llorar, a la iglesia

To complain about something that does not admit complaints.

A mal tiempo, buena cara

You may as well look on the bright side.

A mi juego me llamaron

To be happy for being able to do what you like or are skilled at.
